"Think Different" ... "Dude"

Before I go to BlogHer in San Francisco and sip martini's with Jen, I want to but a laptop.

I look, and read, and compare, and decide, then undecide, then eanie, meanie, miney, moe ...

Your laptop of choice? Likes? Dislikes?

Any pearls of wisdom left in comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance from the person sitting next to me on the airplane.

Lugging my desktop PC would not be a pretty sight or comfortable for flying. [wink]

I've had two new computer in the past 4 years. A Dell and a Mac. The Dell was great for about a year and overnight turned to crap. The customer service is about as good as that. I basically have a Dell paperweight. It couldn't be fixed, despite the issue being with the computer and not a result of faulty handling. Even my 4-year-old refuses to play games on it because, "it's a piece of junk."

I decided to get a Mac at that point and it's incredible.

Once you had Mac you never go back.

I'm a PC whore, so I'd go PC not Mac.
I can tell you that the problems that I had with my Dell (fried graphics card) were fixed - no charge - and they sent someone to my house. It WAS frustrating while it was going on, but it was fixed.

I wouldn't discount other PC brands depending on how often you'll be using the laptop. Is it going to replace your desktop or just supplement it?

Can you tell I work in I.T.?

Doesn't matter which one you get, just get the lightest one. If you're going to have to carry it around, eventually it'll weigh 3 or 4 times the original weight. Go with lightweight!

Yeah, you girls don’t go to SF and trash talk me. Don’t dis the Duck man.

Make sure you hit Buena Vista in the Marina for Irish Coffees and remember me. I use to hang out there all the time. My spirit is still in that place.

Dude, don't do Dell. I don't have good things to say about them, either.

Currently we have 2 Toshibas, one HP and one Acer laptops at our place. One of the Toshibas is about 5 years old and still ticking. Oh, and if you DO go with a Micro$oft OS, DON'T DO VISTA! Make 'em install XP! Major suckage with Vista. Or go with Apple. I've had several Apples and like them, too.

we have 4 Macs---would you say that I am biased? We switched from PC's to MAcs about 3 or 4 years ago and have absolutely NO REGRETS!

If you're doing pictures and stuff in addition to your writing, I would say Apple.

If you're doing finances, I have never liked Apple's versions of Quicken or Money.

If you want to be sneered at by creative types for being too corporate, go Dell fo shizz.

I've never had a Mac but everyone I know loves them. I have a HP laptop which has been great. I'm so jealous about BlogHer. Next year if it moves eastward, I'm going and so are you!

Despite the fact that Dell completely replaced my laptop, free of charge, almost 3 years after I bought it, and aside from the fact that it consistently overheats and my brand new battery no longer keeps a charge *cough* I wouldn't recommend a Dell based solely on my customer service experiences, or lack thereof, with them.
Two big 'ol thumbs down to Dell.
However, both of my roommates had Macs and are still utterly in love with them.

Having just come home from San Fran I wish I was going with you!! You definitely want to take a laptop. I have no suggestions as I don't have one (used my son's)..and they take some getting used to -- keyboard etc. But well worth having along!!

I was going to buy a Mac last year when my desktop died. Jay beat me to the punch and bought a new PC instead. It was a custom build...way more powerful than anything you can buy from the name brands for a third of the price. If you stick with a PC, I can give you the guy's name.

My personal laptop is a Dell XPS and I never had a problem with it the entire time I was overseas. I don't use it much these days.

My work laptop is also a Dell and it's a huge POS.

I'd go for the Mac.
