Lysol, Lard, and Fags

Who knew?

Sweet Sherry at Everyday Possibilities sent me an email with the most unbelievable ads from the 1930's. They are hilarious, but also make me wonder about the laughter ads from today's magazines are going to bring eighty years from now. Probably a good thing I'll never know.

Notice the good woman opening the beer,
probably for her good man.

Seriously, I remember my mother buying cartons
of cig's for Grandpa Kirk for Christmas!

Click on photo to read why women should douche with Lysol.
Should the pine scent version be saved for Christmas time?

I think you have to be British to understand this one!
(maybe)

Well, they ARE happy looking!

Now there's an endorsement!

Which ads of today do you think will be passed around in 80's years as unbelievably funny?

There are so many "bad" ads both on tv and in print these days that it would be hard to choose just one.

The only time I eat "lard" now is when I buy one of those grocery store birthday cakes which my kids loved when they were little...that icing is pure lard and of course a bucket of the colonel's "best"...my boys would just groan if I'd permit that for a meal (!) and I'd ask the girl on the counter for a "bucket 'o lard". But let's be real here -- I suppose I could call it "bucket 'o clog the arteries"!!! :)

I love these old ads. And you brought back of memory of buying cigs for my smokin' Scottish auntie for Christmas!

I am the Newsletter editor for our local historic preservation society and I routinely include these type of ads in the publication to give residents a sense of what the world was like when our neighborhodd was built in the 1930s. As for the ads today that will be considered ridiculous....almost any of the drug ads for maladies that never really existed. The most popular one of 2 years ago is already history. Remember RLS? (Restless Leg Syndrome?).

Oh my, Lysol for a douche and doctors smoking Camels. Luckily, somethings change for the better.

My former mother-in-law was from London and she and my former father-in-law referred to their smokes as "fags".

Thanks for making me smile today!

I found you on Bossy and "Detroit" caught my eye. We are practically neighbors, fans of Bossy, and if you get her to stop here I'd lovingly carry the luggage, hold the fan and feed grapes to all. Only half-joking. I'm still in shock that Lysol and feminine hygiene are in the same ad.

Remember the ads from 20-30 years ago for laundry detergent where they sang "Ring Around the Collar" over and over and talked about what an utter failure the woman was if her husband's shirts had dirt inside his collar? Even as a kid I hated those ads. MIME
